Established in 1999 by Miranda Smith, Managing Director, Miranda Smith Home Care is the longest running private home care agency in New Zealand.

Miranda began providing aged care in the community 26 years ago after working for a similar style agency in the United Kingdom. She introduced the concept here in 1999, becoming the first private home care agency in the country with a vision of setting the standard in home based care. Miranda has been proactive in ensuring Caregivers are recognised and valued for their work and has spoken at conferences nationally and internationally on the future of this industry and its workforce.

Her commitment to providing excellent elderly care for anyone vulnerable who may need help in their own home, has ensured her business is one of the most trusted and respected in the industry.

We pride ourselves on our reputation for quality service and compassionate staff and Caregivers and have enjoyed ongoing positive feedback from Clients over the years. We have achieved this with the ongoing support of our 250 dedicated and experienced Caregivers, many of whom have been with us since our inception. In each regional office we have fantastic Clinical and Resource Coordinator and Homecare Managers for you to deal with directly if you have any concerns or require support.

Miranda moved back to Hawke’s Bay in 2009 with her husband Campbell and three gorgeous boys – Max aged 18, Gus aged 17 and Jimi aged 13 to be closer to family.

In addition to Miranda Smith Homecare, Miranda also owns Karitane®, a nanny agency specialising in care for mothers and their babies.

Can I have the same carer every time?

We understand how reassuring it is to have a familiar caregiver. Where appropriate, we provide consistency of caregiver and match each client with the most appropriate caregiver in regard to experience and availability. If you are having 7 days a week or 24hour care, you may have a team of caregivers to ensure continuity and reliability.

What is palliative care?

Palliative Care is care for people of all ages with a life-limiting condition. Palliative care at home supports those who wish to be surrounded by the little things that they cherish and their wonderful lifetime memories. With competent well trained palliative and end of life caregivers, this can be possible

What is respite care?

Respite care is a chance for you and the person you care for to take a break. It can range from a couple of hours to overnight or 24 hour care.

Can I get hold of someone in an emergency?

We are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week including public holidays. The main office hours are 9.00am to 4.00pm, Monday to Friday. We have an afterhours emergency number run be a very capable on call team.

Do you provide dementia care?

Yes we do. Our caregivers provide support and resources to clients living with dementia. We strive to ensure all caregivers have a sound knowledge of the type of dementia diagnosis. Assisting with daily tasks and cognitive exercises to help ensure those living with dementia retain their dignity and autonomy.

How does home care work?

Once you have made contact, we will send information regarding costs and our services. We can then visit and provide a home care assessment, this will then develop into a “care plan” which outlines your wishes for the care you require and helps caregivers be responsive to your individual needs.

I’d just like to say a massive thank you for providing such exceptional care to help my mother in law attend a family wedding in December. Last minute panic and ringing around dementia units ended with having your contact details and I’m so pleased we found you. The Carer was the perfect person to take care of my mother in law on the day, she was professional, discreet, kind and gentle. She did everything we asked of her and went above and beyond. We will definitely be asking for her again if the need arises.
